i offered a garage there advertised price which they accepted and paid a deposit of £500
2 days latter they refused to sell it to me because they forgot to add VAT is this legal

Hi Colin. It will depend on a couple of things.
If the advertisement does not specify that VAT is not included, then you can assume that the price includes VAT. Therefore the dealer cannot add VAT.
If the ad did say “price excludes VAT” and the salesman did forget to add it on, then it’s considered a genuine mistake and it would be difficult to find a judge who would rule in your favour.
Ultimately the dealership can make up any excuse they like to cancel the contract, and it’s very difficult to force the dealer to sell the car if they don’t want to. You can try and take legal action against the dealer to enforce the contract, but the cost of doing so would be more than the extra cost of the VAT and there’s no guarantee you’d win.
If you think the dealer is being dodgy, your best bet is to get your deposit back, walk away from the deal and report them to Trading Standards.
